What is Flotation Therapy?
‘Floatation Therapy’ is a sensory deprivation therapy that reduces stimulation to the body in a float tank where there is no noise, visual impairment, temperature balance and buoyancy of the water due to high levels of magnesium sulphate salts. (It is like floating on the Dead Sea). The floatation pod is filled with 30cm deep, body temperature water containing about 500 kg of magnesium salts. The effect of this is to reduce sensory input to our nervous system, allowing the body to process stimuli better.
Floating has become a very popular therapy with our fast-paced lifestyles and the increase of stress in our lives. People are struggling to manage their time, leading to anxiety, unmanaged stress, depression, insomnia and hypertension, which floating is able to help control.
Floating helps your body to enter into a relaxed, almost meditative state where there is no muscle tension or pain perceived in the body. It also causes amazing changes in the brain as endorphins are released.
After a float session, endorphins are released in the brain and brainwaves are shifted from beta to alpha and even theta. Theta is a rare brain state that is normally reserved for people trained in meditation. Reduced blood pressure is almost instantly achieved with reduction of potential strokes and heart attack.
Floating is very beneficial for pre & post natal 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancy, promoting relaxation and pain relief and especially beneficial if suffering from preeclampsia or trouble sleeping.
A cutting-edge filtering system ensures that the water remains 100% sterile. In addition, patients are required to shower before their float. Towels, shampoo, soap, earplugs, and other amenities are provided. Floaters have their own personal float pod with private shower, and dressing area. No clothing of any kind is allowed in the tanks for sanitary reasons.
Floats are usually 60 minutes long, but you can also book an express 30 minute float.
Frequently asked questions:
1.Can a pregnant woman float?
YES! Floating allows you to escape the added weight of pregnancy by taking strain off the body, spine and feet! It promotes sleep and helps with all the aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
2.Can I drown in a float tank?
Float tanks are much safer than most bodies of water because they contain a high concentration of salt. It is impossible to sink in a float tank. You would have to make a conscious effort to float face-down to drown. Many people safely sleep while they are floating
3.How sanitary are the float tanks?
The interior of a float tank is exceptionally sanitary. Each tank has up to 700kg of Epsom salts dissolved in the water, which raises the salinity levels too high for bacteria and other pathogens to survive. The solution is also sterilized between each session using filtration and purified using Ozone.
